this talk: is about the strength in reaching out for help and support - with Charlotte Emily Price
My name is Charlotte, I’m 21 and currently finishing my Forensic Science degree at the University of Lincoln. I’ve personally struggled with mental health issues throughout my academic journey – bullying and hateful comments being one of the major causes for these. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety during my degree after reaching out to the Student Wellbeing centre and being directed to the doctors. Both depression and anxiety ruled my life for a significant time; I was scared to leave my house, had no drive to do anything and would spend my days tucked up in bed wishing the pain away.
By taking that huge step and reaching out to the Student Wellbeing centre at my university, I was able to make the best move for my life and future. I know how difficult it can be to make that move but when you finally feel like you’re in a position to reach out and to seek help, DO IT. Speak to your friends and family if you find that easier. But for me, it was so comforting knowing that I could relay my thoughts to someone who had no preconceptions about me. Different things work for different people – I tried mindfulness techniques, breathing exercises and then eventually moved to CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy). This didn’t improve my mental health, even after trying for a few months.
I was finally put on medication at the beginning of 2019 in order to help stabilise the hormones in my body. I am incredibly proud for pushing myself to seek that help because it allowed me to improve my confidence and put me in a better position to look after my mental wellbeing. I was stuck in a rut and constantly overwhelmed by my thoughts until I finally woke up thinking that I had to make that change. If you are also a student right now, please utilise the services available to you because the staff and guidance provided is wonderful and could be life changing.
Focusing on myself and my mental wellbeing today, I have never felt better. My mental health is in the best place. Medication has personally helped aid the process of looking after myself. Something I’ve really found helpful mentally is going for long walks and reflecting on my days – What am I grateful for? What are the positives from my day? What will I do tomorrow to make myself feel good? Asking myself these questions fills me with happiness and gratitude, in turn bettering my mental health. I’ve also found that yoga and meditation work for me now that I go into it with a positive mindset. Yoga with Adrienne on YouTube provides a variety of free online videos that will help relax, calm and cleanse your mind. I’d highly recommend checking them out if you want to practice some mindfulness techniques!
Thank you for listening to my story. It is never too late to reach out and speak to someone if you are struggling. You got this!
